Improving the 10 Level Determining Factors

Wednesday, February 14, 6:30pm-9:30pm
with Edgar Giffenig

We commonly divide instruction in four categories: Technical, tactical, mental and physical. This is not necessarily wrong but there is a more effective way to do this. By identifying more specific factors influencing performance we can improve the focus of our instruction and obtain better results. In an effort to do so I find the following classification more helpful:

  1. Consistency: The ability to hit the ball over and over with similar results.
  2. Precision: The ability to direct the ball exactly where you want it and with the chosen characteristics.
  3. Footwork: The ability to move around the court efficiently.
  4. Perception and Anticipation: The ability to interpret available information to help you prepare early for the next shot.
  5. Spin: The ability to control the ball with different types of spins.
  6. Variation: The ability to hit the ball with the desired combination of height, direction, spin, speed and length.
  7. Ball speed: The ability to hit the ball fast.
  8. Performance Under Pressure: The ability to play your best regardless of the circumstances.
  9. Camouflage: The ability to hide the characteristics of your shots.
  10. Decision Making: The ability to consistently choose that shot that will give you the best probability of winning the point.

The idea is that anyone’s playing ability is an average of their performance in each of these factors, and that by helping them improve in any of these areas their level of play will automatically improve. During the course we will explore each of these factors and identify the best strategies to help players improve.
